Safety starts at sign-up

Whether you're just getting started on TikTok or already have an account, we've put together a list of tools and recommendations to help you have a safe and positive experience.

Create a strong and unique password

TikTok will never message, email, or call you to ask for your password. Create a password that's both easy for you to remember and difficult for others to guess. Never share this information with anyone else, even if they ask.

Require more info to get extra protection

To keep your account extra safe, set up 2-step verification (2SV). This means that each time you log in to your account from a new device, we'll send you a verification code to enter. Never reveal this code to anyone. It's for you and only you!

Keep track of your devices

Use Device Management to give you more control over your online presence.

  • View the date, time, and location of any device your account is logged into.
  • Remove your account from any devices that it's currently logged into.

How do you show up online

While being on TikTok comes with a lot of enjoyment, it also comes with some responsibility. While we expect everyone to follow our Community Guidelines, you also have a big role in shaping your online footprint.

Knowing your audience

You have full control over what you share and don't share on TikTok. You may already have a private account, but if not, you can adjust your privacy settings anytime or choose to make an individual video private when you post. Keep in mind — having a public account means that anyone, whether they're on TikTok or not, is able to:

  • See your profile, followers, and following lists
  • Follow your profile
  • Watch your public posts

You should only post things that you wouldn't mind everyone seeing on the Internet, and follow our Community Guidelines. In fact — we insist.

Depending on your age and region, you may be able to control your privacy settings by selecting who can view or download each post, Duet or Stitch your videos, and comment on your posts.

Private account

  • Followers: only people you approve can follow you
  • Friends: followers that follow you back
  • Only me: all your posts are private

Public account

  • Everyone: anyone on and off TikTok
  • Friends: followers that follow you back
  • Only me: all your posts are private
